eeting of the Youth with Mar Makarios in Austin

Meeting of the Youth with Mar Makarios in Austin
– Nov 8th 2003
Makarios Thirumeni was in Austin during the weekend of Nov 8th and 9th 2003. The
following is an excerpt from a session of Thirumeni with the youth on Nov 8th
2003.

Question : In our church, why do men and women stand on two sides?
Thirumeni:
In the olden days, it was the custom that all the men would stand in
front and women behind. It was HH Baselious Gheevargheese II who
felt that this needs to change with the time and said that this
practice was unfair to the women and they should be at least allowed
to stand in one side.
That is how this custom has been followed to this day.
When the Kalpana was given that women should stand along side men in
the church – there was opposition from some men, but more
significantly, it was the women who opposed the new practice.
Thirumeni was reminded of an incident when a woman would not budge
from her position in the back and had to be moved with force. Our
leaders are more progressive in many respects than our laity –
declared Thirumeni.
