John 14: 1-14
Let us follow this conversation closely between the Lord and his disciples.
Thomas hears Christ saying that He is going away. The natural question comes out through Thomas's mouth. "Lord we do not know where you are going, how can we know the way?" It was a perfectly logical question about the physical limitations of not able to follow Christ to wherever He is going, if they do not
know the way. However Christ's response was beyond his wildest expectations. Probably he would have thought Christ would tell Him about how to reach a far away place, how long it might take them to reach there, how it might be a dangerous journey, what precautions to take etc.
Instead, Christ response was a "paradigm shift" for Thomas (and the
others). "I am the way!" sets in motion a new manner of looking at Christ and
His mission on earth. Christ is speaking of a totally new dimension
they were unaware of till then. He is unraveling mysteries about Himself before His
disciples. He is raising their thinking up several spiritual
notches.
1) Christ says He is going away.
2) When Thomas asks him, he says He Himself is the way by which they need to "walk" to reach where He is going.
3) He says that He Himself is the (same) as the Father (the Father's House is their destination).
So He is the way, He is the final destination also. He is going away, but He is being with them also the same time as the "way". He is the Omni present God! Haleluiah!
There are
elements of truth about the Holy Qurbana in this revelation. And Christ
revealed this truth to Thomas first, in response to his query and
through Thomas to the rest of the disciples, and the rest of
Creation.
Let us also go through an imaginary discourse which Thomas could have had with his own disciples while preaching the Gospel many years later in far away India. While explaining the mysteries of Christ to them, he might have recalled"Christ is the way! We have to walk in Christ, with Christ and through Christ, and this
we do by receiving Him through the Holy Qurbana. He has not gone anywhere, He is with us always. He is also the destination where we are heading. I know this because He Himself told me so!"
The revelation of Christ during this session which is the setting of this Scriptural passage enlightened the character of Thomas, enriching it with understanding of deep mysteries about the Son of Man. The enlightenment could have happened right when Christ revealed the mysteries to him or when the Holy
Spirit later reminded him about Christ's works.Either way, his was a character that was enlightened by the truth of Christ (just as the other apostles).
Praise the Lord of the Apostles who enlightened their characters by revealing unfathomable mysteries to them.
