The Character of Thomas - Humility

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? (KJV) John 14 - 5

Let us focus on the verse, the words uttered by St. Thomas to the Lord.

"Lord" he addresses Christ, then he says "we do not know" (where you are going).

This can be such a wonderful prayer to be used again and again by us in our daily lives.

"Lord we do not know, Help us! Apart from you we are nothing. Apart from you we can do nothing!"

It is not an easy thing to say. In our lives we often are considered experts of certain areas. Our kids, our peers, yes our rivals too - look to us, look upto us; and we are expected to know answers. We are expected to solve problems. To them - it is not easy to say "I do not know - I need help"

Our ego, our "image" in the world will be shattered if we, for a moment, lower ourselves and say "Man, I really do not know this, can someone help?" So we battle on, often with disastrous results, with our little knowledge - only because our pride would not let us admit that "we do not know".

A lot of problems in this world could be solved if people accepted that they actually are not sure of what to do, that they did not know, that they needed help.

Kurielaison - Lord have mercy upon us - is a wonderful little prayer given to us.
Kurielaison is a complete submission before the Lord, and it presumes the admission that "Lord, we do not know - please help us"

St. Thomas's humility shone through
Thomas had no illusions about his dependence on the Lord. He had no problem in admitting his ignorance. He was a humble man well aware of his limitations. That is what is seen in this unassuming expression of Thomas.

It is this humility of Thomas that enabled us to get deeper understanding about the "way", indeed about Christ Himself.

Pray that more of us become like the saintly Thomas; how much more revelations can we then have of the Lord!!
