Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow
disciples, "Let us also go, so that we may die with Him." John 11:16
Here is another thought about Thomas and this verse:
Thomas had been following Jesus since some time. They had reached close to the end of three and half years of companionship. From the time he (and each of the others) would have given up everything to follow Christ, they may have been waiting for the time of which Christ has been talking to them about - about the great things to happen in "the Kingdom of God" which was at hand as Jesus had been preaching.
At this prime moment which was the setting of this verse, Thomas would have realized that this was the occasion he had been waiting for, that they had all been waiting for - something is going to happen at Jerusalem, this is the moment! He had a keen sense of the occasion, "Let us also go" is a rallying call, spurring his comrades to action. This is the moment we have been waiting for. Let us go with Him to Jerusalem, it is time for us to fulfil our purpose in life. We have seen Him heal the sick, calm the winds, drive out demons; by His great power we have been ourselves been empowered, yet those are just shadows of the things to come. The ruling tyranny of the Romans, the hypocrisy of the
Jewish Leaders, we have seen all of that, and we have been with Christ as he condemned these - but this is the moment that really matters - he is calling us - this is the moment of truth - let us follow Him!
This was indeed a critical moment.
As we know from hindsight, Jesus is not coming back from Bethany at all. This is the last time he is walking that way. After raising Lazarus, He is going to Jerusalem, to Calvary, and back home. They would probably not have left the city atleast till atleast Pentecoste Perunnal happened, obeying the command of the Lord during ascension.(Luke 24:49)
Thus Thomas's rallying call was perfectly timed indeed! Praise the Lord for using Thomas our Apostle!
